5 Shows to Watch This Summer

Hey everyone! It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, and I’m coming back with a Top 5 post because I know we all love them. Summer is all about catching up with friends, eating great food, and going through many TV shows. Here’s 5 that I love:

5. One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill is a show that I just recently finished watching. If you know me, you know how much I’ve been raving about this show. It takes you back to high school days, but also has some really beautiful messages, scenes, and acting. Chad Michael Murray. ‘Nuff said. #TeamLeyton

4. Keeping Up With The Kardashians

Living vicariously through a multi-million dollar family sounds like a great way to spend my summer. Pure entertainment. And you’ll be entertained 14 seasons long!

3. The O.C.

I included One Tree Hill, so of course I had to put The O.C. in this list too. A classic! It also makes you want to move to California really bad. And one of the main characters’ name is Summer – how could I not put this in the list? Fun fact: Chad Michael Murray was supposed to play Ryan Atwood, but he turned it down for One Tree Hill.

2. Oh My Ghost

Had to include a k-drama in this list. PARK BO-YOUNG. Everyone’s favourite. This show is incredibly over-dramatic, but it’s also extraordinarily cute and funny. How adorbs are they?

1. Gossip Girl

Unless you live under a rock, you know that Gossip Girl is BACK on Netflix. There’s no shame in rewatching the show for the 5th time. giphy-4.gif

SPRING STYLE // New Purchases Haul

Hey everyone, I’m back with a new post and this time I’m showcasing some items I bought in my recent Forever 21 purchase and how I like to style them. A lot of these pieces are pretty mainstream and can be found at most stores. I was inspired by the warm weather and the end of Winter (finally!). Let’s get started!

Realness Patch Overall Dress

I absolutely love this purchase! It gives me street style racer vibes and can be worn many different ways. In this outfit, I decided to opt for a chic look by pairing the dress with a white turtleneck underneath. Since it’s still a little cold, I wore knee high striped socks from Ardene – which also complement the patches on the overalls. This casual yet chic look is completed with a pair of faux leather sock boots. (And it has pockets – score!)

Outfit made with my new purchases with racer overalls,

Patent Faux Leather Sock Boots

I was dying to get myself a pair of sock boots since that trend is totally killing it right now. Sad to say that this purchase did not satisfy my expectations. 😦 Although they look killer, the height of the heel is slightly taller than I had anticipated and there’s very little padding to support your ankles, making it very difficult to wear for an entire day. I’d only wear these for nights out.

Canvas Cabby Hat

This cabby hat has been one of my favourite go-to accessories, especially on those second day hair days. It fits perfectly snug without worry of it falling off or being too tight that it gives me headaches. It’s also at an affordable price ranging from $10 – $15 depending on the sale that day.

Hooded Faux Fur Jacket

Forever 21 is the best place to purchase high end dupes. Doesn’t this furry jacket look like it could be worth over $80? For $24, I bought this super soft and luxurious jacket that will up your boujee points. You just have to make sure you keep an eye out for sales and epic deals!

V-Cutout Laced Grommet Top

Not a good purchase. Firstly, the shirt is way too big on me even though I got size small. Secondly, this shirt is not flattering on any part of the body!

Floral Satin Dress

The same one seems to be sold out, but I linked the closest one that I could find on their site. Since it’s still a little cold for cami dresses, I wore the dress with a pair of loose culottes. This dress feels super soft and I can imagine myself wearing it in the summer because of how light and flowy it is. At the same time, a simple cami dress can be used in a casual or a dressy occasion – a closet secret weapon.

If you’re looking for other budget alternative stores, check out my YesStyle vs. RomWe post where I review some items I’ve purchased and compare the two!

Rock on,

SUMMER 2017 // Top 5 From My Taiwan Exchange + Common Concerns

It’s crunch time for finding a job, registering for summer school, or booking flights for your next big vacation. For those of you who know me, you’d know I went on an AIESEC exchange in the summer of 2017 to Hsinchu, Taiwan to teach English in an elementary school. I want to share with you my experience for those of you who are considering doing any international exchange! Here are the Top 5 Things that I enjoyed from my exchange. Keep reading if you’re unsure whether or not to go abroad this summer as I address some common concerns!

1. Creating Relationships Halfway Across the World

I got to meet amazing people halfway across the world who I still keep in contact with to this day.

2. Eating Different Food

I LOVE FOOD! Widen your culinary palette and taste all the food you can! If you go to Taiwan, you HAVE to try the stinky tofu, shaved iced, and street side Taiwanese popcorn chicken!

3. Getting to Live Beyond a Normal Tourist

Especially with an internship/volunteering, you are going to be fully immersed into the culture. You’ll be surprised by how much you will learn about the place, the people, the culture, and yourself in just a few months.

4. Upping Your Insta Game

Nuff said.

5. Learning About Yourself

When you have so much time on your own and away from your regular day to day life, you tend to reflect a lot about yourself. I came back from my trip in a much stronger headspace. Travel on!

Common Concerns

Now a lot of people know how fun it is to go abroad. But let’s be real – there are so many things that hold you back. I want to address some common concerns of going abroad for a summer that will hopefully help you make your decision!

Money is an issue.

This is probably one of the biggest concerns with going abroad. Luckily, many internships abroad offer paid positions. AIESEC offers paid positions that will just perfectly cover your expenses during your time there. You’ve just got to do your research! Plus, many of these internships only last two months, which gives you another two months to find a regular summer job.

Will I be at a disadvantage for finding a job next year?

NO! You will most definitely not. Travelling and working/volunteering abroad is a huge accomplishment. Don’t sell yourself short. It is something that you can talk about in great lengths in any of your future endeavours.

I don’t want to be living in a sketchy place.

The beauty of going on a trip and volunteering is getting to see what it’s really like – and not just the sugar-coated tourist experience. Don’t go expecting to be living in hotel standard places because odds are, you won’t. This is an opportunity to jump far out of your comfort zone and you should embrace it. It’s all part of the experience! Although I had the opportunity to live with host families, I know Exchange Participants that stayed at dinky buildings – but found that to be one of the best aspects of their trip because of how close they bonded with everyone.

If you have any other questions, feel free to leave a comment or send me a message! Check out my travel vlogs from my trip to Taiwan on YouTube. Otherwise, safe travels + dream on! For those of you at Western University, AIESEC is hosting an Exchange Info Session on April 5th. Go check it out to learn more!

Dream on,

Em

Happy News // March 20th, 2018

Happy News 1

For those of you who know me personally, know that I am an avid article sharer on my social media accounts. I decided to consolidate some of the neat things that I find over the week to a Happy News blog post to make your week a little better.

Disclaimer: I am by no means any kind of reporter and I don’t claim that all of the articles I share are 100% factually correct. However, I will bring you NON-fake news to the best of my abilities!

Today’s the International Day of Happiness and it’s the First Day of Spring!

Pretty fitting right?

There’s a new Buzzfeed Worth It video 🙌🏻🥓

Love Army raised over $2 million to build houses for Rohingya Refugees

Brandon Stanton, founder of Humans of New York, has started a Go Fund Me page to raise money to build houses for Rohingya Refugees. This time he’s doing it on behalf of #LoveArmy, a group of our favourite social media gurus and Viners who are making a difference. This fundraiser comes after Love Army has raised over $2 million themselves for this cause. The world is awesome.

If you love musicals, the Lin-Manuel Miranda & Ben Platt collab will make your week

Called “Found Tonight”, the Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen stars mashed up “The Story of Tonight” and “You Will Be Found”. They’re doing it to donate proceeds to the March For Our Lives Institute which is a campaign started to end gun violence. On March 24, there will be a march in Washington DC and 829 around the world. Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Common, and Vic Mensa are among the artists that are performing and joining the march.

Is “Infinity War” REALLY the most ambitious crossover ever?

Twitter is exploding with memes arguing that there have been way bigger crossovers than Infinity War. That’s So Suite Life of Hannah Montana takes the cake for me. Which one is the most iconic to you?

The CN Tower Phase 1 Renovations are complete and the views are even better than before

The new LookOut Level looks pretty cool with the floor to ceiling panoramic views and it’s open to the public! They’re still working on renovations, which are expected to be completed in mid-June of this summer.

Online Budget Battle: YesStyle vs. Romwe

romwe vs yesstyle

Spring is around the corner and it’s time to change up our wardrobes! I’m going to review some products that I ordered from YesStyle & Romwe and give you some pro tips on ordering from these budget stores.

YesStyle

Style/Selection: Trendy, but largely South Korean/Asian styles. They have everything including clothes, false lashes, shoes, Korean beauty products, undergarments, you name it. The wide selection actually makes it harder since there are just so. many. products. Luckily, they have reliable reviews on their product pages so you know which ones to avoid.

Price: YesStyle is fairly priced. I’d say their prices are comparable to stores such as Forever 21 and H&M.

Shipping: YesStyle is a Hong Kong-based brand, but their manufacturing and warehouse is in China. As a result, shipping can take a long time. Pro Tip #1: Each item states the approximate time it’ll take to ship. Since they ship the entire order at once, if even one item in your cart takes 30 days to ship, it will make your entire order ship around that time too. I was impressed with their service. They forgot to ship my earrings, and they didn’t hesitate to re-ship them to me (though that’ll take another month).

Quality: The quality isn’t the best, but it isn’t too bad either; you get what you pay for (only the sale price!). The items are what you’d expect as long as you read the reviews.

Verdict: I’m more interested in shopping here for their jewelry, accessories, and beauty products as opposed to their clothing. Though if your style is more of an Asian style, this is a great place for you to shop!

Some of my favourite pieces from left to right:

  1. Striped Zip Jacket ($31.89) & Letter Short Sleeve Tee ($9.37)
  2. Ruffled Gingham Off-the-Shoulder Top (not for sale anymore, but here’s a similar one)
  3. Cutout Mini Skirt ($11.82)
  4. Asymmetric Drop Earrings ($2.49)
  5. 3/4-Sleeve V-Neck Chiffon Blouse ($13.09)

Romwe

Style/Selection: To my surprise, most of the items that I’ve ordered at Romwe are true to the images on the website – as long as you’re weary of the reviews on the product pages. Pro Tip #2: I also suggest staying away from regular graphic tees (unless you like your shirts shrinking in the dryer) and to order a size down in all their clothing. Even their XS jeans are way too big for me. That said, I wear a lot more of the clothes from Romwe than I do from my YesStyle clothes. Romwe’s style is a lot more current and in par with my own.

Price: I’m a sucker for good deals and Romwe definitely brings those “amazing” deals. They raise a few eyebrows considering the amount of marketing they do that seems to good to be true. I mean tanktops for $2? Really? Their prices are cheap – but so is their quality.

Shipping: Again Romwe ships from China, so shipping can take quite a long time.

Quality: To be frank – Romwe clothes are cheap. The quality is pretty terrible. However, if you’re looking to purchase something that’s inexpensive and to get ~5 wears out of it, definitely don’t be afraid to shop here.

Verdict: I like the clothes here and I have gotten a few wears out of them. If you’re looking for cheap clothes that you don’t expect to last forever – Romwe’s your gal. Pro Tip #3: Though I liked the earrings I ordered from here, they broke really easily after a couple of tugs. So maybe stick to YesStyle for jewelry.

Some of my favourite pieces from left to right:

  1. Frill Off Shoulder Elasticized Lantern Sleeve Top ($15.39)
  2. Drop Shoulder Yellow Hoodie (the same one isn’t for sale anymore, but here’s an alternative)
  3. Space Dye Drop Shoulder Tee Dress ($11.28)
  4. Frayed Trim Tapered Jeans ($16.67)
  5. Sequin Detail Hoop Earrings ($2.55)

Overall, both YesStyle and Romwe are good cheaper and more convenient alternatives to your regular clothing stores.  I can truthfully say that I’m satisfied with my shopping experience for both stores. Let me know what other online stores I should review next! 👇

Outfit of the Day | The Classic Trio – White, Black, and Beige

This outfit is inspired by one of my favourite colour combinations: white, black, and beige. Whatever pieces you pair together, as long as they’re one of these three colours, it’s almost impossible to go wrong. Here in Toronto the weather is going through that limbo summer-spring phase and I know that I never know how to dress for this weather. Here’s a classic look that I opt for on these limbo days – layers. layers. layers.

OOTD

THE POWER OF LAYERS! Don’t be scared to layer a jacket on top of another jacket on top of another jacket. Scroll down for OOTD details!

OOTD

My inside top is a white thermal turtleneck from UNIQLO – it’s a closet must have. Then my second layer is a thin jacket/blazer from ZARA which you can see clearer here. Then my final layer is a hooded jacket lined with fleece from UNIQLO Japan. Jeans are Hollister jeggings and shoes are Romwe sneakers. My current favourite – star shaped earrings – are from YesStyle and can be found here.

What I want to emphasis is that all of the pieces I wore in this outfit can be duped by items in your own closet. And this fit is extremely simple! Switch the turtleneck for a plain white tee, or go for your favourite cardigan instead of the inner jacket. You’ve got so many options!

If you like what you see, follow me on Instagram and follow my blog! Black, white, and beige are staples for me – what colours can you not live without in your wardrobe? Comment below!
